Training in Imago Relationship Therapy Transformed my Private Practice
There are defining moments in each of our lives. Those moments when a decision is made that changes the entire course of one’s life. One such moment for me, is when I made the decision to take it Imago Relationship Therapy training.
My dream or my mission, was to provide couples counseling or marriage and family therapy. To prepare myself, I completed a Doctorate of Ministry in Pastoral Counseling and a three-year clinical internship in psychodynamic psychotherapy with a one-year emphasis on marriage counseling and family systems theory. Following my preparation, I launched my private practice. My practice did well and quickly grew to a full time practice. However, the area I struggled in the most was counseling couples. The marriage counseling I provided was dreadful at best and as I look back on it now, not very helpful to the couples who entrusted me with their marriages. I knew something was missing.
I started to investigate different training programs. I considered going back and getting a PhD in psychology with an emphasis on marriage counseling or couples counseling. That's when I discovered Dr. Harvel Hendricks and Imago relationship therapy. I discovered an approach to couples counseling that theoretically aligned with my understanding of the impact of childhood experiences on adult lives. I also discovered an approach that had extremely profound yet simple applications that I could use effectively in a clinical setting in counseling with couples and doing marriage counseling. From the very beginning as I applied what I was learning from the training to the couples counseling I was doing I began to see results unlike anything that I had experienced previously.
Soon I had gained confidence and was even excited about doing marriage counseling. Before long, my practice was filled and I had a waiting list of clients. About 6 years ago I decided to expand to a group practice. Today the Midwest Relationship Center, LLC is a thriving group practice serving the greater metropolitan area of southwestern Illinois and St. Louis Missouri. All therapists are trained in Imago Relationship Therapy. One requirement to join our group practice is to be licensed and to commit to becoming a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist.
The decision to do the Imago Relationship Therapy training rather than to go back and do another degree indeed was one of those defining moments that I look back on with tremendous gratitude for Dr. Harvel Hendricks and Helen LaKelly hunt and the greater community of Imago Relationships International.
